The damage doesn't really make a complete hole, but something pushed into the material enough to crack it and push inward. It wouldn't hold water, but it is actually still quite functional. Perhaps if you wanted a Bakelite tin to actually use without worrying too much about damaging a pristine original, this might be a nice option. It also makes a great display piece.
